Oxford Landing is inspired by the foundational military history of the Town of Penhold. In 1939, farmland was purchased and land was cleared for the future Penhold Canadian Forces Base. In 1940, the base opened with one building, while 7 hangars and 31 other buildings were being constructed. Six hard surfaced runways made up the airfield. In August 1941, the base was handed over to a Service Flying Training School that was transferred from Britain. This was the result of an agreement with Britain to train Commonwealth pilots - a key component in Canada’s contribution to the Second World War. The first two trains arrived in Penhold in August of 1941, bringing in 600 officers and personnel. The facility started with 20 training aircraft that were primarily twin-engined Airspeed Oxfords. Eventually there were close to 200 Oxford trainers being used. During the next three years, well over 1,200 pilots graduated. In October 1944, the station was officially handed back to the RCAF and was promptly closed down. Many of the buildings were demolished or disposed of through Crown Assets. However, a few of the buildings remained, including all of the hangars. Surplus Lancaster bombers were stored on site for a time until disposal. During the next several years, additional new buildings and facilities were constructed. Extensive landscaping and tree planting was carried out on the facility, and a curling rink was built in 1958. A new and larger control tower went into operation in 1961, and a new outdoor swimming pool opened in 1964. Today, the base continues to host the annual regional Air Cadet summer camps that had been held since the Second World War. In the 1960s, they were joined by the national scholarship flying programme on gliders and light aircraft that lasted for several years. In 1966, the cadet summer camp was expanded to include all of western Canada and has served approximately 1,700 cadets per year since. In 1994, the base was downgraded, decommissioned and closed. Mynarski Park, the residential portion of the base, was renamed to Springbrook in 1995 when private developers purchased the lands from the Department of National Defense. The former military base area was sold to a different developer who referred to the area as Harvard Park. Oxford Landing is visioned to be a vibrant, diversified and beautiful community with a unique small town character that values its military heritage and history. The design of Oxford Landing includes special amenity features that have been thoughtfully integrated into the neighbourhood layout to ensure the creation of a complete community. Oxford Landing will include single-family, semi-detached, and fee-simple homes, as well as street-fronting townhomes and manufactured homes. This diverse housing product will be located in a mix of starter and move-up housing areas. These residential areas are planned using a modified grid street pattern to create a well-connected transportation network. Meanwhile, open spaces will incorporate both natural areas and manicured areas within a variety of pocket parks, community parks, stormwater ponds, school sites, and a multi-use trail system. These streetscapes and open spaces make up the public realm of the community.
